MATHEMATICAL FORMULAS:

Sometimes it's just a matter of some simple math to figure out the area or volume of a piece that will help you. If that's the case we offer the following basic formulas to determine the area or volume of some of the more common shapes.

Areas:

Shape:

Formula:

Triangle

base times height divided by two

Rectangle

a times b, where a and b denotes the length of the sides (for a square a and b are equal)

Circle

pi times radius squared(pi=3.14159)

Cube

6 times a squared (a=length of side)

Sphere

4 pi times the radius squared(pi=3.14159)

Cylinder

height times circumference (does not include ends, use circle formula for ends)

Volumes:

Shape:

Formula:

Cube

a times b times c (a,b and c equal the length, depth and height)

Sphere

4/3 pi times radius cubed(pi=3.14159)

Tetrahedron

.11785 times length of edge (for equilateral tetrahedron)

Pyramid

area of base times height divided by

Cone

area of base times height divided by three

Cylinder

area of base times height
